Why does it matter what I wear to my photoshoot?

Believe it or not, styling is a HUGE factor that plays into the vibe of your photos. Not just the kind of clothes you're wearing, but also the colors. I think there's this stigma that you have to be super dressed up for your session, and that's just not the case. Being in this field, and seeing how much styling actually goes in to the final outcome of your photos has allowed me to develop an eye for what looks and feels best! Here's my two cents!:

  1. Your outfits should feel like YOU. At the end of the day, these photos are forever. Your outfits are a representation of your style, what your most confident in. So if you're normally in jeans, and a cute T-shirt, wearing a body con dress and heels to your session, most likely isn't going to curate photos that match you.
  2. AVOID NEON COLORS. Sticking to earthy neutral tones is going to be the best bet as it's not super distracting, and won't pull away from the main focus... YOU.
  3. Stray away from tight fitted clothing. As mentioned previously, tight fitting clothing can feel restricting. I'm a movement photographer, meaning lots of running, lifting poses, etc. When you're wearing something tight fitted, it can feel unnatural to be doing those types of prompts.
  4. COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER BUT DON'T MATCH. As much as I love a good matchy matchy moment, it doesn't photograph very well. The reason being, that you'll most likely blend into each other. You want to create a color palette that you're absolutely in love with, and incorporate it into both of your outfits. Throw in some texture, like a pin striped button up for him, or a neutral floral colored dress for her.
  5. Pick your location first, outfits second! Why the HECK does that matter? Because you don't want to blend in with your location. So if you have a very green location, you're going to want to do opposing earthy tones like burnt orange, browns, creams, tans. The beach is a little bit easier, because almost every earthy toned color goes with the vibes of the beach.

Also just a final note, SPLURGE ON GLAM! These photos are literally forever, hire a makeup artist, go all out! If you need recs, I know of some extremely talented makeup artists in Jacksonville, NC:)

The photos from m + f's Topsail Beach Photoshoot is a PERFECT example of these tips. They were comfortable, and their outfits matched the vibe of who they are individually. The earthy tones complimented the location, but didn't pull away from THEM<3
